52 | Club: Toronto Hunt This is a composite or collage pasted together out of many individual photographs against a painted background. The JRR Catalogue attributes the photograph to Notman & Fraser but this one is signed Stanton and Vicars, Photo[graphers]. At the Toronto Hunt is a list identifying 45 people in the picture. They include James G. Worts and George Gooderham, who were Masters of Foxhounds for several years, as wells as James G. Worts Jr and Frederick Worts (possibly Thomas Frederick Worts b. 1857}, and also Mrs. Harriet Anne Leys, George Gooderham's daughter. |

53 | Coat of Arms of William George Gooderham Granted to William George Gooderham of Alverthorpe in Rosedale in the city of Toronto and dominion of Canada on 9 August 1912. The grant is recorded at the College of Arms in the UK: reference Grants 81/245. The coat of arms was granted for the use of the grantee and his descendants, and for that of the other descendants of his father, all according to the laws of arms. This is called an ‘extended limitation’, i.e. extended back by (in this case) one generation. That means male-line descendants – men and women, but male-line only (except in those circumstances when a coat of arms can pass in the female line as a quartering). The coat of arms appears as follows: Helm (symbol of an esquire and gentleman): Black, topped with a black ridge from front to back emblazoned with 3 pairs of white stripes Motto Scroll: Toujours En Avant (meaning "forever forward") Arms: Two masted ship (symbolizing a remarkable expedition by sea) with 5 oars and 4 red flags surmounted by three wheat sheafs (symbol of a miller) on a blue (signifying truth and loyalty) background Crest: A black raven (symbol of knowledge and divine providence) with wings spread standing atop a wheat sheaf lying horizontally on top of the helm Mantling: a series of four leaves on either side (Ivy leaves symbolize strong and lasting friendship), alternating black and white, cascading down from the top of the helm to the midpoint of the arms. Supporter: none Compartment: none | |||

58 | Cover photo for The House Belongs to The Government by G.Kent Gooderham During his lifetime, Kent Gooderham, wrote down many of the stories he had heard and researched about his Ezekiel ancestors. Now Kent's son, George, has brought them together into an extremely readable book about how his ancestors became Indian Agents for the Blackfoot tribe out west, and how Kent's father, George Hamilton Gooderham, walked between the two worlds of the Blackfoot out west as a country born son and the world of his privileged cousins, when he came east to be educated, and worked on the the family farms, mills, and ancillary enterprises here in Ontario. |

The complaint reads (as best as I can make out): "May 9th this is the first Bill I received bearing the portraits of my worthy old bosses. in keeping with a pair of worthy businessmen who have stood the brunt of over forty years mercantile and other business with integrity and to the great benefit of the community..." |

Doctor of The University of Calgary, honoris causa June 1972 Pictured with family members from absolute left to right: Patty Morgenstern (RMG's daughter), G. Kent Gooderham (Son), Ev Gooderham (RMG's wife), Helen Rae Gooderham (GKG's wife), George Hamilton Gooderham, Nordy Morgenstern (RMG's son-in-law), Elizabeth Robinson (GHG's Daughter), Ronald M. Gooderham (GHG's Cousin), Elenore Crawford (GHG's daughter) and John Crawford (GHG son-in-law). On the occasion of the conferring of the degree of Doctor of The University of Calgary, honoris causa upon George Hamilton Gooderham June 1972 The following biography was obtained from the University of Calgary Gazette, May, 1972. Mr. Gooderham, born on the Poorman Indian Reserve in Central Saskatchewan began his life among the Indians and throughout his life maintained a very close friendship and working relationship with them. Both the Blackfoot and Blood Bands made him an honorary Chief and he served on the executive of the Kainai Chieftainship, an organization limited to a number of prominent men made Honorary Chiefs by the Blood Indian Band. Mr. Gooderham worked for the Blackfoot Indians from 1920, taking over from his father as Agent and later becoming Regional supervisor, a position he retained until his retirement in 1954. In 1955 he launched a new career with the Harvie Foundation, becoming the first employee of the Glenbow Foundation. Here he has put his vast knowledge of the Indian people and their history to work, writing stories and articles and building the Glenbow Collection. Now he is working with the Riveredge Foundation, a private Foundation that grew out of the original Glenbow. His interests have touched the whole community, however, and he is past Director of the Provincial Association of the Canadian Mental Health Association, of which he organized the Calgary branch; a past associated Direct of the Calgary Stampede and Exhibition and Stampede Board and a past president of the Alberta Pioneers and Old Timers Association and the Men |
